places are defined by 'accepted' labels typically determined by a lineage of commoning and homogenization. this project examines the history of the Charles River in Boston and provides a different 'reading' of how the Charles is not just a river, but a collection of objects, a repetition of words in books, and palettes of color in historical interpretations. through site documentation, archival research, and color extraction the Charles "river" is not just a natural feature, but a socialized watercourse.
